Nicknames

I’ve had only a few nicknames throughout the years. They have mostly been variations on my name. Then, a couple years ago, a friend began calling me, “Jerome”. She was the only one, and I didn’t know why she chose that name. Actually, to be honest, I don't even remember her calling me that, but she is confident that she started it so I concede. Anyway, a few months ago, some other friends starting calling me Jerome, not even knowing the first girl. When I inquired as to why that name was chosen, they said it was because it sounded like a black person’s name. Now, I’m about as white as Mayonnaise, but I think it’s the irony that makes it so funny. Now the name has caught on at work. All things considered, it's definitely not the worst thing I've been called. In fact, I kind of like it.

Of course, I always appreciate good nicknames. I was in a band a couple years ago, and we got a new member who had the same name as me. I've dealt with this situation before in that my younger cousin shares my name. The best result, usually, is to try to pin a nickname on the other person. In the case of my cousin, the family decided to use “big” and “little” before our name considering I was older and bigger. Then he outgrew me, and we had to drop the “big” and “little” and add the first letter of our middle name to avoid confusion. As for the band mate, I really tried to get him to go with the name Tiger Stripes, but it never caught on. I thought it was a good nickname: Tiger Stripes...sounds fierce and manly. He left the band shortly after.

I used to want a really cool nickname (not that Jerome's not cool). I think it was something I sought after because I was small and bad at sports. I thought, perhaps, if I had a cool nickname things would start happening for me. Nowadays, friends have donned me with some cool nicknames, but they usually don't stick.

I'm not really sure how to end this blog po....................................
